Eikosifoinissa is located on Mount Paggaio, near the borders of the Serres and Kavala regional units, and is considered one of the oldest continuously operating monasteries in Greece. It was originally founded in the 5th century AD and reorganized in the 9th century. The monastery played an important spiritual role during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods and suffered destruction and looting, particularly in 1917. Its katholikon (main church) is a three-aisled basilica with a dome, featuring significant frescoes and sacred relics. Today, it functions as a women\u2019s monastery with an active monastic community and strong pilgrimage activity. The Monastery of Panagia Eikosifoinissa is located on Mount Paggaio, near the borders of the Serres and Kavala regional units, and is considered one of the oldest continuously operating monasteries in Greece. It was originally founded in the 5th century AD and reorganized in the 9th century. The monastery played an important spiritual role during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods and suffered destruction and looting, particularly in 1917. Its katholikon (main church) is a three-aisled basilica with a dome, featuring significant frescoes and sacred relics. Today, it functions as a women\u2019s monastery with an active monastic community and strong pilgrimage activity.
